If you’ve found this site because you are hearing unexplained noises in one or both ears and assume it’s tinnitus, you need to see a doctor – do not self-diagnose. It could be the equally benign Meniere’s disease – or something far more serious like an obstruction in an artery (causing a sound as the blood flows though it) that requires urgent medical attention. Get it checked out without delay!

Assuming you have seen a doctor or audiologist and tinnitus has been confirmed, you now have a name for that weird, annoying noise that’s driving you crazy. And now you’re looking for a natural treatment for tinnitus.

Here’s the good news – it is not life-threatening or a symptom of mental illness. Indeed, you’re in distinguished company, along with fellow tinnitus-suffers like David Letterman, Barbra Streisand, William Shatner and Eric Clapton. They are among an estimated 10 per cent of the population who hear sporadic or constant high-pitched whining, popping, hissing and even loud explosion-like sounds.

The bad news? Tinnitus is awfully difficult to treat, unless it has an obvious cause like an ear infection or a blockage caused by a buildup of ear wax. Most times, the cause of tinnitus is not so simple – and if it’s the result of a physical injury to your delicate hearing mechanism, there may be nothing doctors can do.

Many cases of tinnitus are the result of exposure to loud music, which is why so many musicians seem prone to it . . . .and young people who have the volume cranked on their headset or car sound systems. It can also develop if you are working for long periods around noisy machinery, for example. Loud sounds can damage the delicate hearing mechanism and it can lead to phantom signals being sent to the brain in the complete absence of any actual sound. In other words, your brain is “hearing” something that doesn’t exist.

Conventional treatments for tinnitus range from surgery and drugs to special diets and herbal supplements, but many tinnitus suffers have found the results disappointing. Though temporary relief is sometimes obtained, tinnitus often returns and is sometimes worse.

Since you are here because you are looking for a natural treatment for tinnitus, let’s look at some options.

1) Begin a log of your most severe episodes of tinnitus, even if the noises you hear are constant, there will be times when you are more aware of them. By keeping a log you can explore what you were doing immediately preceding this episode to see if there might be a contributing factor. For example, Tinnitus sufferers often say their symptoms are worse if they are stressed or if they have had a poor night’s sleep.

2) Watch your diet. Caffeine and alcohol are often cited as making tinnitus worse and some sufferers have found abstaining from drinks containing caffeine and alcohol will dramatically reduce their tinnitus. If your daily log shows your tinnitus worse after, say, consuming high-sugar food or drink you will be able to adjust your diet to see if changes can bring you some relief.

3) Make a list of all medications and prescription drugs you are taking and ask your pharmacist for a list of all side-effects. Talk to your doctor about the results – particularly for those drugs that have the potential to cause hearing problems or headaches.

You should also know that long-term use of Aspirin and generic brand drugs containing acetacyclic acid have been linked to the development of both tinnitus and Meniere’s disease. If you use Aspirin just to treat minor ailments like headache you might try another painkiller for a while to see if your tinnitus symptoms ease. But DO NOT stop taking Aspirin if it has been prescribed by a physician to prevent blood clots because you have coronary artery disease. Discuss your Aspirin use with your doctor and see if there is an alternative.

Finally, be patient – though tinnitus often appears suddenly it can take a long time to identify and address the root causes.

There are many natural treatments for tinnitus that do not involve taking pharmaceutical drugs like anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. (Surgery is used only rarely, when there are specific causes for tinnitus like a tumor).

The following is a guide to natural tinnitus treatments that sufferers say have provided some relief:

Acupuncture

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture – inserting fine needles in various parts of the body to treat disease – is often used to treat tinnitus. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that disease is a symptom of an imbalance of natural energy in the body. Acupuncture treatments aim to restore balance and stimulate the body’s immune systems to heal itself.

Though it’s not known how exactly acupuncture works, many scientific studies have concluded that it a) might indeed stimulate an immune system response, b) causes an improvement through the “placebo” effect or through the patient’s own belief that the treatment will make them feel better and c) whatever the outcome, acupuncture is usually painless and will cause no harm when carried out by an experienced practitioner using sterile, disposable needles. You do not need a doctor’s referral for acupuncture, but some physicians will recommend specific practitioners. Treatment prices vary, but generally run from $50 to $120 per session.

Biofeedback

Used to treat a wide variety of ailments, from migraine headaches to chronic pain, biofeedback teaches patients to control a wide variety of body functions and feelings, from blood pressure to pain and stress.

A biofeedback specialist will attach electrodes to the patient’s skin to measure one or more of the following: Skin temperature, muscle tension, brain wave activity. The readouts will provide basic information to guide the treatment. Since stress and anxiety of often reported as making tinnitus symptoms worse, biofeedback therapy usually focuses on getting the patient to achieve increasingly deeper states of relaxation and to be aware of those triggers in everyday life that increase their stress.

Some good results have been reported by tinnitus sufferers, though it can take several sessions to see relief. No physician referral is needed and cost varies widely, usually starting at around $40 per session.

Herbal And Natural Supplement Remedies

The aim of many herbal remedies is to boost the body’s immune system and tinnitus patients use a wide variety of supplements and mineral treatments they say help them control their symptoms. Caution: If your are taking medication for other ailments you should, before taking any course of herbal or other supplements, check with your physician for possible negative effects. For example, cardiac patients on warfarin, a blood thinner, are urged not to eat cranberries or drink cranberry juice because it interferes with the warfarin therapy.

Among the most often herbal and supplement therapies for tinnitus are:

Ginko biloba – a leaf extract antoixidant that is also said to help increase blood flow to large and small blood vessels.

Melatonin – taking supplements of this hormone, which is secreted by the brain’s pineal gland, is said to help restore healthy sleeping patterns disrupted if natural melatonin levels decline, as they do with aging. Again, poor sleep is associated with worse tinnitus symptoms.

Niacin – Known as Vitamin B3, it is necessary for the nervous system, and helps the body convert food into glucose energy. B vitamins promote healthy eyes, liver and skin and it is believed niacin might ease tinnitus symptoms by promoting increased blood flow to the vessels in the ear.

Many other natural supplements are also said to help tinnitus, from garlic capsules to hawthorn leaf extract. Check your local herbal store for advice. Though scientific support for the effectiveness of some herbal supplements is sketchy, they do no harm at low or moderate doses and you might find something that works for you.

Hypnosis

A widely used technique for helping people quit smoking and overcome trauma and phobias, hypnosis is also cited as being helpful in reducing the symptoms of tinnitus.

A trained hypnotist will help the patient achieve a deep state of relaxation and through suggestion help them deal with stress, depression and insomnia – three factors often reported among tinnitus sufferers. Unlike what you might have seen in the movies there’s nothing weird about the hypnotic experience – it’s just a deep state of relaxation that is very pleasant. No physician referral is needed for hypnosis and cost varies from about $50 and up per session. Several sessions might be needed.

Tinnitus and hearing loss go hand in hand as the vast majority of tinnitus sufferers experience permanent, mild-to-severe impaired hearing.

It’s estimated that 80-90 per cent of people who develop tinnitus have some hearing loss. Indeed, it’s the hearing loss some people notice first BEFORE they gradually become aware of the high-pitched whistling sound or other constant noise in the background.

This is particularly true for those of us who live and work in noisy environments. For example, if your workplace is noisy – a factor equally found in busy offices and manufacturing plants – you might go a long time before you notice you are “hearing” phantom sounds ranging from a whine to popping and crackling. But you might be aware that your hearing isn’t quite what it was and you are having to ask people to repeat what they said, or you are turning the volume up on your TV or car audio. If friends and family are constantly telling you “that’s loud!” when you watch TV or listen to music, you might have a problem.

I first noticed my hearing loss at about the same time as I grew increasingly aware of the noise in my right ear – subsequently diagnosed as Meniere’s Disease. I hear both a high-pitched whine and a bass rumble in that ear, but when I’m busy working or in noisy place, I don’t “hear” the noise, even though it is constantly there. It is very noticeable only when I’m in a quiet environment.

What I do know is that my right-ear hearing is significantly impaired. For example, I’ve had to adjust by using the phone on my left ear as there’s a degree of distortion in my right ear that is quite distracting. I just don’t hear phone conversations clearly in that ear. Like many of you I’m sure, I also struggle in a conversation in a crowded room so I must turn my “good” left ear to the person I’m listening to.

Though I can still enjoy live music and find the left ear somehow compensates for the poor performance of the right ear, the experience becomes miserable if the volume is high. That causes a buzzing distortion in the right ear and for hours afterwards the high-pitched noise is worse.

Like other people with hearing loss, I also tend to speak louder! I consciously try not to do it, but it’s almost automatic – like someone trying to talk to you while listening to something on their headphones.

If you are aware of some hearing loss, you should first see a physician to check for a serious underlying cause, such as a tumour or blood vessel problem. If tinnitus or Meniere’s Disease is diagnosed, your doctor will almost certainly refer you to a hearing specialist for tests. A hearing clinic can also recommend treatment to mitigate the effects of tinnitus.

Unfortunately, in most cases of tinnitus and Meniere’s Disease the hearing loss is permanent. The good news is that there are ways of coping so this doesn’t seriously lower your quality of life.

www.TinnitusMiracle.com

A high pitched ringing in the ears is just one of the many symptoms of tinnitus. It’s essential to know what tinnitus symptoms are so you can separate them from other hearing disorders.

Remember, tinnitus is a noise that only YOU hear – others in the same room or location won’t hear what you are hearing.

That’s because tinnitus refers to “phantom” sounds generated by ears damaged by sudden trauma like an explosion or prolonged exposure to loud noise.

The most common symptoms of tinnitus include:

1 A high-pitched ringing in the ears, a whistling or whining sound.
2 Pops, crackles and chirping sounds like insects
3 Sudden loud noises like an explosion
4 A low, constant rumbling sound like a running motor
5 A wind or ocean-wave like sound
6 Musical sounds like chimes

Along with the above symptoms you might be also aware of a noticeable deterioration in your hearing such as difficulty focusing on a conversation in a noisy room, or having to raise the volume on a TV or radio. A hearing test will determine the extent of your loss and whether a heading aid will help.

Everyone’s tinnitus symptoms are different. Some people hear their tinnitus constantly, while others hear the annoying sounds from time to time.

Tinnitus often develops slowly over time from exposure to loud noise in your workplace or environment. It might be barely audible at first. It’s rather like changes in eyesight that eventually require reading or distance glasses. And you might become unconsciously acclimatized over time to your tinnitus that you are hardly aware it exists. That is, until the noise grows so loud and persistent you are “suddenly” aware of it.

This revelation often occurs during a moment of silence, say when you’ve switched off the TV for the night and finally notice it.

Tinnitus can sometimes appear suddenly if you ears are subject to an overwhelming stress like an explosion.Indeed, many U.S. service personnel returning from duty on Iraq and Afghanistan report tinnitus and hearing loss. Star Trek actor William Shatner says standing too close to a studio special effects explosion caused his tinnitus.

However, the sudden appearance of any unexplained noise in the ears should ALWAYS be checked out by a physician – don’t assume it is tinnitus as there are several possible alternative causes, some of them serious – like a partial blockage of a blood vessel close to the ears or a tumour in the ear.

OK, it’s a bit of a trick question since ringing in ears (tinnitus) can be caused by Meniere’s disease.

If you’ve read other articles on this site you’ll know that tinnitus symptoms include ringing in the ears, loud pops, buzzing and other strange and irritating noises. Tinnitus is most often the result of inner-ear damage due to exposure to loud music or machinery as well physical injury or an ear infection. However, add to that list of possible causes the ominous-sounding Meniere’s disease.

4 classic symptoms of Meniere’s disease – watch this video:

Now if you have Meniere’s disease you can relax a little – is merely an inner-ear disorder. Though it can be pretty debilitating it is not life-threatening and patients can learn techniques and treatments to manage its symptoms. The bad news is there’s no cure, though research continues.

The disease is named after the 19th century 19th French physician Prosper Ménière, who identified inner-ear disorders as the cause of vertigo. Meniere’s disease is almost always characterized by episodes of dizziness and imbalance that are frequently accompanied by nausea. In the severest cases patients can actually lose balance and fall to the ground. Such episodes can come in clusters within a relatively short time. It can be frightening and these attacks leave the patient exhausted and needing to sleep for several hours to recover. However, Meniere’s sufferers often go months without an attack.

Meniere’s usually is confined to one ear and causes a constant high-pitched whining noise, or sometimes a low rumbling sound – what we call tinnitus. While tinnitus can begin in young people, especially among musicians exposed to loud music or those working around loud machinery, Meniere’s most often strikes after age 40.

There’s still a lot of debate about what causes Meniere’s disease. For many years the popular theory was an irregular buildup of fluid in the inner ear that interrupts the proper transmission of audio signals to the brain. However, some scientists now believe Meniere’s could be a hereditary genetic defect (the disease appears to run in some families).
Migraine sufferers also seem more prone to Meniere’s. Another theory is that a viral infection could trigger the ailment.

Before we go on, we must stress that it’s very important to get a definitive diagnosis of the cause of tinnitus because in a tiny minority of cases of unusual ear noise the sound is caused by turbulence in a blood vessel like the carotid artery. That turbulence might be the result of an aneurysm, a balloon-like bulge in the blood vessel wall that could rupture. Or it might be due to a buildup of fatty deposits that could lead to a blockage and possible stroke. Either case can be life-threatening which is why it’s important to get your ear noise checked out. This is often done with an MRI or CT scan.

Now, if your physician and/or audiologist confirms you do have Meniere’s disease, what can you do about it? Well, like tinnitus from whatever cause, the results of conventional treatment for ringing in the ears involving drugs are disappointing – and most people rightly don’t like the idea of taking anti-depressants, antibiotics and other medications with all the unpleasant side effects they bring.

Natural therapies show promise, from noise masking to herbal remedies. Some patients put on a strict low-salt diet to keep body fluids at a lower level report and improvement in their symptoms. Biofeedback, relaxation techniques and stress management also help as stress seems to make Meniere’s worse.

Some of the techniques used by Tinnitus Miracle author and medical researcher Thomas Coleman might also help Meniere’s sufferers.
